The end of the dreams

Wisła Kraków happened to say farewell to the European cup in the 2009/2010 season surprisingly early. The White Star failed to pass the first obstacle, meaning the Levadia Tallin team.

The hosting team, despite the plan to focus on defending their goal attempted several times to launch counterattacks which could have resulted in scoring a goal. The first occasion emerged as soon as 13 minute into the game, when Igor Morozow delivered a header shot after a corner kick. In the first half of the match Wisła had three convenient situations to score yet our players lacked the cold-blood to finish them off. Piotr Ćwielong failed to take advantage of two virtually must-score situations. Levadia could have scored a goal in the 37 minute in which Vitaly Gussev came out to a clean shooting position but the shot was defended by Mariusz Pawełek.

The second half of the match has was dictated by the Polish team, yet to no avail since the ball magically kept missing Kaalma’s goal. Levadia’s goalie was doing good job, defending, among others, Patryk Małecki’s shot, who was in a one-on-one situation with him. In  61 minute Andraż Kirm hit the post. The same situation occurred in 88 minute in which Radosław Sobolewski also hit the post while the final blow delivered by Paweł Brożek was miraculously defended by Kaalma.

The black scenario came to pass a minute later. One of Levadia’s players was fouled at the 20 meter. The referee ordered a free kick. The kick was confidently executed with a low shot that finally reached Wisła’s goal.

Wisła’s players lacked time to make up the loss. Almost 2000 Levadia’s supporters danced in joy after the referee’s final whistle.
