Data publikacji: 11-10-2008 09:46The 177th Kraków derby turned out to be lucky for Wisła, who defeated their rival from across Błonia 2:0, although the team had to wait until the 82nd minute for their first goal. Arkadiusz Głowacki and Grzegorz Kmiecik scored the two goals for the White Star.
Wisła Kraków played the match in an experimental formation – with three defenders and five midfielders. Piotr Brożek and Marcin Baszczyński took on the role of wingers. The players handled themselves quite well in the new formation, but their lack of effectiveness should give coach Skorża cause for concern. The home team should have led by at least 2:0 by the end of the first half, but were not able to score despite an overwhelming advantage.
Wisła switched to the 1-4-4-2 formation in the second half of the match. The scene on the pitch continued to look exactly like it had during the initial 45 minutes – Wisła dominated, attacked, but was unable to score a shot on Cracovia.
Following a play in which it remains a mystery as to how Radosław Sobolewski managed not to score, Cracovia carried out a counterattack that ended with the ball finding its way into the net. The referee, however, did not recognize the goal as Marcin Krzywicki, whose first attempt rebounded off the goalpost with the second one making it in, was offside. Cracovia momentarily caught the wind in their sail, but the home team managed to regain control of the situation after a few minutes and proceeded to renew their attacks.
Wisła finally defeated Sławomir Olszewski in the 82nd minute of the match. Following a cross executed by Marek Zieńczuk from a free kick, Arkadiusz Głowacki jumped the highest and scored with a headshot. Cracovia was able to “score” another goal on Marcin Juszczyk two minutes before the end of regulation time, but they were once again offside. When it seemed as though Wisła would win 1:0, the team scored once more. Grzegorz Kmiecik sent the ball into the net after a cross from the left flank by Patryk Małecki.
The match gave Wisła their first points during this year’s edition of the Ekstraklasa Cup. An important derby victory against Cracovia thus follows in the aftermath of two defeats against Śląsk and Piast. And it wasn’t an easy victory, despite the fact that the White Star didn’t allow their opponents to unfurl their wings. Coach Skorża will have some time before the league match against Piast Gliwice to work on his players’ weakest point – i.e. their effectiveness.
