A Torrent of Goals and Wisła's Defeat

Wisła Kraków lost their first sparring match during the team's preparations for the spring round of the 2008/2009 season. Odense BK outplayed the White Star by defeating the Kraków team 4:2.

The match began fortuitously for Wisła, as the White Star took the lead in the 11th minute. Głowacki executed a nice free kick shot that bounced off the wall of Danish defenders, as a result of which Onyszko had trouble clearing the ball out in front of himself. Rafał Boguski got the rebound and swiftly directed the ball into the net. A moment later the White Star had an opportunity to raise the score. Rafał Boguski once again played a big hand in the play by intercepting the ball and relaying it on to the advancing Diaz. The Costa Rican, however, shot the ball straight into the side net.

A few minutes later Odense proved that Wisła wasn’t the only team that could execute set plays well. First, following a cross by Fall taken from a free kick from the right side of the pitch, the ball rebounded off the goal post and fell back into play. Absalonsen managed to reach the ball and, even though his shot also hit the goal post, this time the ball fell into the net. Later on, the Danes took a free kick from the 35-meter mark, and Sillanpaa (who is currently being tested by Wisła) failed to jump up high enough for the ball, which allowed Ruud to outplay the goalkeeper and stuff the ball into the net from point-blank range. The two set plays changed the score to 2:1 to Odense’s advantage in the 20th minute of the match. The Danes struck another blow towards the end of the first half. Ruud carried out an excellent play down the right flank of the pitch and passed the ball to Fall, who, finding himself in a one-on-one situation against Sillanpaa, simply powered the ball straight into the net from a distance of just a few meters.

In the 65th minute it looked as though Wisła still had a chance to strive for a draw, or even win the match. The referee awarded the White Star a penalty kick, which Cleber converted into a goal. However, before finally pointing to the 11th meter mark, the referee heard out protests by Odense’s players, who insisted the foul had been committed in front of the penalty area. Perhaps this is why, in order to “make it up” to Odense, the referee once again pointed to the 11th meter mark after Głowacki shoved one of his opponents in Wisła’s penalty area. Hansen confidently executed the penalty kick, and Odense once again regained a two-goal lead. Wisła was unable to close the gap in the remaining minutes and the match ended with the Danes prevailing 4:2.
