A Goalless Draw in Wrocław
Data publikacji: 14-10-2008 10:50Wisła Kraków played Śląsk Wrocław to a goalless draw in an Ekstraklasa Cup match held on Sunday at the stadium on Oporowska Street.
Coach Maciej Skorża gave Głowacki, Baszczyński, Piotr Brożek, Sobolewski, and Cantoro a day off. The aforementioned players did not travel to Wrocław for the Ekstraklasa Cup match against Śląsk. Moreover, coach Skorża himself missed the match, with Tomasz Kulawik standing in for him.
The match was even. Both teams had several opportunities to score, but neither of them was able to take advantage of the good situations they managed to create. The home team carried out one of their best plays in the 33rd minute when Śląsk’s captain, Dariusz Sztylka, fired a powerful shot from beyond the penalty area. Marcin Juszczyk showed off his quick reflexes by deflecting the ball over the crossbar.
Patryk Małecki stood out from among Wisła’s players during the first half of the match. In the 7th minute of the match the White Star’s forward received a pass from Cleber and charged into the penalty area, but Jacek Banaszyński managed to defend his powerful shot.
In the 31st minute Tadeusz Socha handled the ball in the penalty area following a cross by Andrzej Niedzielan. A penalty kick should have been awarded to Wisła, but the referee failed to notice the offence committed by the home team’s defender. A few minutes later Niedzielan shot the ball directly into Banaszyński in a one-on-one situation.
The second half of the match likewise resulted in no goals being scored, even though both teams had ample opportunities to do so. In the 53rd minute of the match Mateusz Kowalski passed the ball in front of the goal to Niedzielan, whose shot nonetheless flew over the crossbar. A few minutes earlier one of Śląsk Wrocław’s players, Marek Gancarczyk, missed the goal from a few meters away.
From the 75th minute onwards Wisła played one-man down as Przemysław Szabat was forced to leave the pitch after receiving a second yellow card. Despite having a one-man advantage, the home team was unable to clinch any of their plays with an on-target shot. Przemysław Łudziński failed to take advantage of two opportunities towards the end of the match.
