Data publikacji: 06-03-2009 12:06Wisła was unable to redeem itself for the team's defeat to Lech Poznań in the fall season. The first quarterfinal match of the Polish Cup between Wisła Kraków and Lech Poznań ended in the White Star losing 0:1.

Wisła Kraków began the spring season with a false start. A draw in Bytom failed to satisfy anybody in the White Star’s camp. After the match against Polonia Bytom, coach Maciej Skorża stated that he wanted to see Wisła play like they did in the second half of the match against Polonia. The Kraków team was given the opportunity to demonstrate their good form in the match against Lech Poznań. The Polish champions wanted to prove that they were still a force to be reckoned with, and they additionally wanted to erase the bad impression they had made after losing 1:4 at home to the Railwaymen in the fall season. They were able to do so until the 49th minute of the match.
The first half of the match was fierce, with nothing missing from the game except for a goal. Wisła Kraków went on the offensive from the very get-go in the hope of quickly scoring a goal against Lech. The home team’s offensive plays, although quite numerous, lacked the proverbial finishing touch, which is why Wisła failed to score the desired goal.
Beto and Piotr Ćwielong played on the White Star’s offense from the start of the match. Neither player managed to score, but they did put on a good performance. Beto outplayed up to two or three of Lech’s defenders at a time in several plays, but failed to take advantage of an excellent pass from Marcin Baszczyński on the right wing in the 27th minute. Finding himself in a one-on-one situation against Krzysztof Kotorowski, the Brazilian sent the ball flying high instead of directing it into the net. Ćwielong, on the other hand, could have opened the score just before halftime, but was blocked by Tomasz Bandrowski at the last moment, while “Baszcz’s” rebound shot proved ineffective.
Lech carried out its first threatening play more than 20 minutes into the match. If it weren’t for Marcin Baszczyński’s intervention, Semir Stilić could have found himself in a one-on-one situation against Mariusz Pawełek. Robert Lewandowski, invisible throughout the first half of the match, showed himself in the 45th minute when he made an attempt on the White Star’s goal from the corner of the penalty area.
Both teams played cautiously and waited for the other side to make a mistake. Such an occasion occurred in the 49th minute of the match. Robert Lewandowski received a perpendicular pass, got into a one-on-one situation against Pawełek, and calmly placed the ball into the net. Wisła’s entire defense stopped for a moment to protest that Lech’s striker had received the ball with his hand. The loss of a goal visibly clipped Wisła’s wings. The team strove to even the score but either luck or accuracy was missing from their game. In the 53rd minute the ball flew centimeters wide of Kotorowski’s goalpost. In the 78th minute, Semir Stilić cleared the ball from the goal line after a shot by Marek Zieńczuk, saving his team from the loss of a goal.
Lech staged threatening counterattacks. One such play, carried out in extra time, should have ended in a second goal, but Mariusz Pawełek executed a fantastic save by clearing the ball for a corner kick after Semir Stilić’s shot from close range.
Wisła lost to Lech Poznań at home for the second consecutive time. The rematch of the Polish Cup quarterfinal is scheduled for April, although it’s going to be difficult for the White Star’s players to play catch up in Poznań and eliminate Lech from the Polish Cup. Prior to that, Wisła faces two league matches against Polonia Warszawa and GKS Bełchatów, which they must win if the team is to seriously think about successfully competing for the championship title.
