Wisła win a thriller in Białystok

Published: 30-04-2018 14:40

The White Star players came to Białystok to fight as equals with Jagiellonia that is one of the candidates to become a champion. In case of a victory, Ireneusz Mamrot’s players would have taken back the lead in the race for the title, but the side that achieved its aim was Wisła, that thanks to the goal of Zoran Arsenić, won 1-0 and closed the point gap between them and Korona Kielce.

There were two changes in Wisła’s line-up from the clash with Legia. On the pitch we saw Jakub Bartkowski that replaced Matej Palčič, that had got injured, and instead of Tibor Halilović played Rafał Boguski who wore the capitan’s armband.

Sun = draw

From the very beginning, the host tried to impose their way of playing and in the first minutes they created two chances that, however, were cleared either by Wisła’s defence or by the goalkeeper. Then, it was the White Star that started to attack. The fans from Cracow held their breath when Carlitos put the ball into the net, but, as it turned out a few seconds later, he did it after the referee blew his whistle.

In the first half, set pieces were one of Jagiellonia players’ most dangerous weapons but in the end, they didn’t find their way to score a goal. Wisła’s answer came a few moments later when the captain Boguski gave a sample of his technical skills with a bicycle kick which unfortunately was saved by Marian Kelemen.

Rain = Wisła’s victory

Though the first half ended with the same score as it had started, the match could be considered an interesting one. After a substitution at the beginning of the second half, Jagiellonia started to play in an even more offensive way. A situation that is definitely worth mentioning is the corner kick, after which Roman Bezjak was fouled in the penalty area. With help of the VAR system, the referee Daniel Stefański decided to declare a penalty kick but Julián Cuesta saved Wisła.

In the minute 83, the White Star scored a long awaited goal. After a corner kick, Marcin Wasilewski tried to achieve a goal but Kelemen together with Nemanja Mitrović stopped him. However, the action wasn’t finished and Zoran Arsenić didn’t doubt for a second and put the ball int the net. Jagiellonia desperately tried to gain the three points and their furious attacks characterised the last quarter of the game but Cuesta successfully guarded his goal.

When it started to rain, Zoran Arsenić scored a goal. The sky was crying as well as Jagiellonia fans since it was Wisła that came back home with the three points.
