Wisła defeats APOEL!
Published: 18-08-2011 14:07Until recent APOEL F.C. managed to maintain a clean sheet in the qualifying round of the Champions League. This changed after the match against Wisła Kraków. Thanks to Patryk Małecki's goal in the 71th minute the White Star managed to defeat the champions of Cyprus 1:0.

From the start of the match APOEL made it clear that they meant business. The team from Cyprus pressed high up the pitch and attacked whenever they had possession of the ball. The visitors were also not afraid of shooting from a distance.
The home team made their first serious attempt on goal in the 22nd minute. Jovanović delivered a great cross from the right wing and Chiotis let the ball through. This gave Małecki a chance to shoot at an empty goal, but in the difficult situation he fumbled. This was the breakthrough moment of the first half and from then on Wisła was gaining the lead and attacking with confidence.
The second half was once again an all-out battle. Wisła created the first promising opportunity when Melikson missed the goal by just a few centimetres after hitting the crossbar from a free kick. APOEL responded with Ailton's individual play. Finally in the 71st minute the White Star took the lead. Nunez started the attack and just when it seemed that there was no one to play to, he saw Patryk Małecki running on the right side. Małecki fooled his rival with a feint and placed the ball near the far post, putting Wisła in the lead for the remainder of the match.
