This is how only legends say goodbye! Wisła 1-1 Lech

Published: 14-05-2018 13:33

On Sunday afternoon the White Star played for the last time this season at home. The match against Lech Poznań was quite special in many respects. In order to keep dreaming about competing in Europe, Wisła had to win or, at least, draw even despite the lack of the best scorer - Carlos López. And when after regular time Lech were ahead and all hope was almost gone, Paweł Brożek, who is about to end his adventure with the club from Cracow, in a beautiful way equalled in the last action of the match. As a consequence, Wisła maintain the chance to play in the European competitions.

Before the kick off, two highly important celebrations took place. First, members of the team that won the double in 2002/2003 were thanked for their success and then, players of Wisła and Lech made the guard of honour for two legendary players for whom this season is the last one in the club - Arkadiusz Głowacki and Paweł Brożek. “Głowa” couldn’t play because of the injury. “Brozio” started the match on the bench and the position of the leader of the attack went to Marko Kolar.

Aggressive from the start!

From the very beginning, the Croatian showed his bravery knocking to the ground bigger players of Lech. Both Wisła and their rival fought and looked for their chances to score but it wasn’t until the end of the first quarter that the first occasion came. Fortunately, the ball sent by Christian Gytkjær hit the bar. The White Star had a few opportunities but all of the attempts were missed.

The first half, despite the fierce battle on the pitch, ended in a goalless draw. The beginning of the second part wasn’t better for the host team, as Gytkjær made up for what he hadn’t done earlier and managed to score. After the goal, the encounter was interrupted because of the smoke of the flares.

Legends worthy farewell

Supporters gathered on the stadium had to wait for Wisła’s answer quite long. In the minute 71 Nikola Mitrović tried to lob the goalkeeper but Putnocky saved his team. A few seconds later, a moment awaited for more than 20 thousand fans happened. For the last time, Paweł Brożek played for Wisła and, what’s more, scored a goal. The action was initiated by Mitrović and after one of the Lech players’ mistake “Brozio” put the ball into the net with a volley, which resulted in euphoria like in the best times! Thanks to this goal, Wisła drew with Lech Poznań and keep the chance to play in Europe.
