Last Summer’s Nightmare

Published: 06-08-2010 11:40

For the second year in a row, Wisła Kraków was knocked out of the UEFA Europa League by a lower-ranked team. The last year’s disgrace of Levadia Tallinn appeared to be a nightmare of the past, unfortunately, history repeats itself. Wisła was knocked out by a team ranked 3rd in the Azerbaijan Premier League.

Before the return match, the White Star footballers were hopeful of qualifying to the next round of the UEFA Europa League. Until 25th minute, Wisła Kraków indeed appeared to be able to make up for the one-goal loss at home and to return home victorious.  In the 20th minute, Patryk Małecki passed the ball to Maciej Żuławski, but Veliyev was there to make a save.

Afterwards, Wisła’s nightmare has begun. In the 25th minute, Milan Jovanić struggled to divert the ball after a distant shot by Maksim Medvedev. Three minutes later, the Azeri team fired a shot against the post, which distracted Wisła’s footballers. This is when Andrejs Rubins made a cross and Afran Ismayilov headed the ball in.  In the 33rd minute, Wisła was already losing with two goals, after Raut Aliyev hammered the ball in. Almost 2 minutes later, FK Qarabağ Ağdam scored the third and last goal. Rashad A. Sadygov received a straight pass, was put one-on-one with Jovanić and succeeded in scoring the goal.

Although Paweł Brożek and Boguski scored two goals after the break, Wisła Kraków suffered another severe defeat in the Europa League qualifiers.
