Carrillo: Defeat in the legends’ farewell match was not an option

Published: 15-05-2018 12:47

It was a dramatic game in which Wisła struggled till the last minute. After a goal from Paweł Brożek in the last action, the White Star team drew 1-1 and still have a chance to compete in Europe! That is why, it is not a surprise that Wisła coach Joan Carrillo was in a good mood during the post-match press conference.

‘It was an exciting encounter full of emotions and at the same time, a farewell to two players that made their mark in the history of this club. We are happy to have such support from our fans. Before the match, we gathered in the dressing room and agreed that the best gift would be a victory. Paweł said that he couldn’t imagine him saying goodbye and losing. What’s beautiful is that his last action was sealed with a goal. Both him and Arek deserve great respect. It’s a pity Arek couldn’t step onto the pitch, but whether he played or not, it is him and Paweł that we would like to dedicate the whole match to’ - started Joan Carrillo.

Fighting till the end does pay

After this introduction, the coach moved on to assess the match. ‘My boys played a good game and deserved to draw, despite the problems we had had before the match. The courageous heart of the team let us keep fighting till the end. It’s not the result we dreamed of but we still have a chance’ - admitted the White Star coach.

Journalists gathered at the press conference took the opportunity to ask about Marko Kolar who, for the first time, was included in the starting line-up. ‘I think Marko did a good job, also in defense. It’s obvious that scoring goals is the main requirement a forward has to meet but in my opinion, Kolar performed his tasks, especially that till now, he hadn’t had many occasions to play’ - noted the Spanish.

Kolar was replaced by Paweł Brożek who gave Wisła hope of competing in Europe. Is his goal a gateway to play in the last game of the season? Who else has a chance to go to Zabrze and help the team in a “do or die match”? ‘I cannot exclude that Paweł will go to Zabrze with us. Regarding Fran Vélez, he suffered from muscle ache and we wanted him to rest. Despite some absences, my team were able to play in a good style. I am glad they could adapt to this situation’ – admitted Carrillo.

What’s the White Star strength? Fans!

‘One more time I would like to thank the fans for all their support today. I am pleased they can appreciate all Wisła players. A big thank you for them because they are our great strength’ – concluded the 49-year coach.
