Wisła defeated in the Super Cup
Published: 24-07-2008 11:03In a rejuvenated lineup Wisła Kraków lost 1:2 to Legia Warszawa in the Polish Super Cup match.
Despite playing in their strongest lineup, the Legionnaires labored long and hard against the White Star. Although they dominated the match from the very beginning, and were even the first ones to score – in the 13th minute Chinyama defeated Marcin Juszczyk – Coach Skorża’s players quickly showed that they weren’t going to give up so easily. Just two minutes later Grzegorz Kmiecik took advantage of Krzysztof Mączyński’s excellent pass from a free kick and evened the score to 1:1 with a headshot.
During the first half of the match Legia had two more excellent opportunities to score, but fortunately Marcin Juszczyk didn’t allow himself to be surprised by neither Kiełbowicz nor Iwański.
Wisła didn’t create very many goal-scoring opportunities in the second half, while those chances they did create were not taken advantage of. Luck was on the side Jan Urban’s team, just as in the 72nd minute when Choto kicked the ball out of his own penalty area straight under Kmiecik’s legs, with the ball subsequently just missing Jan Mucha’s goal by a small distance.
Just when it seemed as though the match would end in a tie, Mauro Cantoro made a huge mistake, losing hold of the ball on his own side of the pitch. The ball quickly wandered over to Rocki on the right, who, in what probably was an attempt to cross the ball into the penalty area…sent the ball into the goal.
Wisła lost but by means was inferior to Legia. Haphazard chance caused an ambitiously playing young Wisła to lose a goal towards the end of the match. Krzysztof Mączyński, who assisted in the first goal, as well as Patryk Małecki, who played courageously throughout the match, both deserve to be complemented. Cleber also confirmed his class.
