Wisła Already The Leader

Published: 19-08-2008 10:40

Following two matches and three goals by Paweł Brożek, Wisła is already the league leader. The lone leader - as the White Star is the only team with a complete set of victories following the first two matches of the season.

The White Star approached the league match with Polonia following a decisive defeat against Barcelona, thus to a certain extent it was unknown what shape the team’s players would be in. Early on in the match the home team could have threatened Mariusz Pawełek’s goal, but Daniel Mąka’s shots from a distance were off target. Wisła’s reply came in the 6th minute of the match when Piotr Brożek threw the ball from the sidelines into Polonia’s penalty area to Marek Zieńczuk, who crossed the ball along the length of the goal. However, none of Wisła’s players were able to close the play.

Polonia’s players had their best chance of taking the lead in the 15th minute of the match. Mąka outplayed Junior Diaz, but Mariusz Pawełek saved his powerful shot. The same player tried to overcome Pawełek towards the end of the first half, with the White Star’s goalkeeper prevailing once again.

Wisła’s players scored a goal in the 29th minute. Tomas Jirsak played a perpendicular pass to Boguski, who passed the ball over to Paweł Brożek in front of the goal. Brożek turned around and with a forceful shot placed the ball into the net. The guests could have raised the score to 2:0 before half time, but Boguski was unable to reach the ball in a play that was almost identical to the one that previously ended in a goal being scored. This time it was Paweł Brożek who passed the ball from the right.

The picture of the game changed after half time. The White Star had possession of the ball for long periods and calmly controlled the situation on the field. Wisła could have scored a second goal in the 50th minute, but Boguski once again failed to reach the ball following a pass from Paweł Brożek. The home side increasingly dominated on the pitch towards the end of the match. In the 76th minute Piotr Piechniak missed pushing the ball into the goal by a few centimeters. Pawełek intervened uncertainly on a few occasions, but none of Polonia’s players were able to take advantage of this.

Wisła was able to achieve what the home side wasn’t able to achieve. The second goal fell in the 89th minute of the match following a play executed by the Brożek brothers. Piotr Brożek sent a long pass between Polonia’s defenders to Paweł, who shot the ball into an empty goal after passing Polonia’s defenders and goalie.

After two matches Wisła occupies first place in the league. Unfortunately, Radosław Sobolewski’s name has had to be added to the injury list after the Kraków midfielder was forced to leave the pitch in the 14th minute of the match.
