Wisła Advances to the 1/8 of the Polish Cup

Wisła Kraków surely defeated Lechia II Gdańsk 3:0 in the 1/16 final of the Polish Cup and advanced to the next stage of the play-offs.

Following a win against Jagiellonia in a league match, it was time for a match in the Polish Cup against Lechia’s reserves. Coach Maciaj Skorża allowed some of his starting players to rest, with both Paweł Brożek and Radosław Sobolewski sitting out on the bench. Instead, the fans gathered at the stadium on Traugutta Street were able to see Marcelo, a Brazilian player, debut in his first official match for Wisła. Marcelo played next to Arkadiusz Głowacki on center defense.

And it was actually Marcelo who could have scored a goal for the White Star in the very first minute of the match. Following a cross into Lechia’s penalty area, Marcelo jumped up the highest and hit the ball with his head, but the host’s goalie, Dominik Sobański, managed to defend the shot. Sobański was the hero of the match during the first half. Lechia’s goalie executed a number of excellent saves, thanks to which his team was able to maintain a clean sheet. In the 12th minute, Sobański stopped Głowacki’s shot on two occasions after Wisła’s player first struck the ball with his head, and then with his foot. Ten minutes later Sobański defended a shot by Zieńczuk. After this, Kmiecik, Małecki, Cantoro, and Niedzielan tried to defeat the host’s goalie…despite these efforts, the scoreboard continued to show 0:0.

The second half of the match was similar to the first – Wisła attacked, Sobański defended. Paweł Brożek and Tomas Jirsak came onto the pitch in the 63rd minute of the match. This move turned out to be a shot in the bulls-eye, as just one minute later a goal was scored following a play executed by these two players. Brożek laid the ball out for Jirsak, who placed it in the net with a cunning shot. Eight minutes later it was already 2:0 for Wisła. Paweł Brożek hit the ball into the goal with his head after receiving a pass from Marek Zieńczuk. In the 82nd minute Brożek fixed the score at 3:0.

The match ended in a surefire win by Wisła, but already during the first half of the match the team from Kraków should have determined the outcome of the rivalry to its own advantage. It was only thanks to Dominik Sobański’s excellent form that Lechia had been able to hope for a favorable outcome up until the 64th minute.
