White Star Routs League Lightweight

Published: 30-09-2008 11:44

Wisła Kraków is not easing up the pace. Following victories in Białystok and Gdańsk, it was time for a win at home. The White Star had no mercy for Arka Gdynia, routing the team by as much as 4:0.

After having played three away matches Wisła finally returned to Reymonta Street 22, where the team faced the Ekstraklasa’s lightweight – Arka Gdynia.  Arka had hitherto managed to gather the same amount of points as the White Star in the league, and this was a great opportunity for Wisła to get a three-point lead on their rival.  An opportunity that Wisła did not fail to take advantage of.
The home side took the lead as early as the eighth minute of the match.  Arkadiusz Głowacki converted a corner kick cross into a goal.  A one-goal lead, however, was not enough to satisfy Wisła’s players, who raised the score to 2:0 ten minutes later.  Tomas Jirsak crossed the ball into Arka’s penalty area from the right; Junior Diaz passed the ball to Paweł Brożek, who defeated Norbert Witkowski with a half-turn shot.  Arka only managed to carry out one threatening play – after receiving a pass from Dariusz Ulanowski in the penalty area, the unguarded Zbigniew Zakrzewski took a headshot on goal, but the ball sailed over Mariusz Pawełek’s cross bar.

The match became somewhat lethargic in the second half.  The home side maintained a confident lead, while the guests weren’t able to find a way to overcome their well-disposed opponent.  It wasn’t until the 62nd minute that Arka came close to scoring when, following a pass from a free kick, Karwan took a headshot on goal that just barely missed the outside of the goalpost.  The match picked up pace in the 69th minute when Paweł Brożek scored his second goal after receiving a pass from Marcin Baszczyński.  Four minutes later it could have already been 4:0.  Rafał Boguski, who had been substituted in during the second half of the match, passed the ball to Paweł Brożek, who played the ball back to Boguski, who fired a volley shot that, alas, Witkowski was able to defend.  Marek Zieńczuk had no luck in trying to kick the rebound into the goal from a sharp angle.  Junior Diaz finished off the Gdynians in extra time by scoring a goal directly from a free kick.

Marcelo, who had earlier debuted for Wisła in the Polish Cup match against Lechia II Gdańsk, played the entire 90 minutes.  The Brazilian played on center defense alongside Arkadiusz Głowacki.  Marcelo committed no mistakes, and was practically impossible to pass for Arka’s players.  He played well in the air as well, winning many head balls.
