Two Own Goals, But Wisła Still Prevails

Published: 26-08-2008 12:45

Wisła Kraków defeated GKS Bełchatów 2:1 at home in the 3rd round of the Ekstraklasa. As many as two own goals were scored during the match.

Fans honored Marcin Baszczyński’s father, who passed away this night, with a minute of silence. The Wisła defender was absent from the lineup – thus Slovak Peter Singlar substituted him. Mateusz Kowalski, a league debutant, played next to Singlar on center defense.

The match turned out well for Wisła. In the 27th minute Paweł Brożek received the ball from Peter Singlar in the penalty area. Krzystof Kozik rebounded the ball, which hit Cecot and wandered back to Brożek, who placed it into the empty goal. The home side could have had a higher lead after the first half, however Kozik was twice able to defend Brożek’s shots in one-on-one situations. Nonetheless, luck smiled on the White Star at the beginning of the second half. Wisła raised its lead to 2:0 following an own goal by Dariusz Pietrasiak.

The guests didn’t break down and tried to even the score, but Cetnarski, Costly, and Jarzębowski’s shots were all off target. In the 61st minute of the match Mariusz Pawełek showed off his good side by defending a shot from a free kick executed by Jarzębowski, but turned out to be helpless in the 69th minute when the ball, heading for Pawełek, was intercepted by Cleber who… placed it into his own net.

Despite having lost a goal under such unfortunate circumstances, Wisła’s players controlled the course of the match until the end. The White Star can now add another 3 points to its name. Peter Singlar (who also chalked up an assist during Paweł Brożek’s goal), and Mateusz Kowalski (who had a very successful debut) both showed off their good sides. Leo Beenhakker, the coach of Poland’s national team, watched the match live from the stands. Will Paweł Brożek’s fourth goal this season lead to him being called up to the national team? We shall find out soon.
