Rybus - Wisła's Executioner

Wisła Kraków lost to Legia Warszawa 1:2 in the match ending the 27th round of the OE. This was the first time the new Polish Champions were defeated this season.

For Wisła this was a prestigious match, for Legia – a chance to end the season in 2nd place. From the very start of the match it was apparent that the home side was more motivated as they continually carried out threatening plays that could have ended with Wisła losing a goal. The lack of Arkadiusz Głowacki, Cleber, and Radosław Sobolewski was felt in the ranks of the White Star. Dariusz Dudka replaced Cleber on mid-defense, but this was not a good day for Dudka, who was outplayed by Grzelak on numerous occasions, while in the 41st minute of the match he received a second yellow card and had to leave the field.

It was Legia that set the tone of the match, and finally documented their advantage in the 29th minute, when Jakub Wawrzyniak passed the ball to Maciej Rybus from the side of the goal, and Rybus directed the ball into the net from a short distance. Pawełek had to capitulate once again just after half time. In the 47th minute Maciej Rybus scored his second goal.

Five minutes later it could have been 2:1. Tomas Jirsak was fouled in Legia’s penalty box, and Paweł Brożek, who had been substituted in during half time, executed the penalty kick. He kicked the ball a la Panenka, but Mucha sensed his intention and had no trouble defending the shot. Nevertheless, Paweł slightly redeemed himself in the 60th minute by scoring a consolation goal for Wisła. Junior Diaz dribbled the ball into the penalty box and then retreated the ball to Brożek, who packed the ball into the empty goal.

Coach Skorża’s side continued to try and score an equalizing goal without success. Although this was Wisła’s first defeat this season, but it was a painful defeat. The White Star’s players couldn’t motivate themselves for a match that in reality had no significance for them.
