Persistence Pays Off

Following a goalless draw against ŁKS, for a long time it appeared as though the match in Wodzisław would end with the same result. Wisła's players failed to take advantage of incredible opportunities, but this time around they turned out to be effective in extra time, with both Paweł Brożek and Małecki defeating Stachowiak.

The home team carried out the first threatening play of the match in the 4th minute. Daniel Rygel sent the ball flying past the right goal post from a distance of about 16 meters. Nearly all of the match’s next 40 minutes belonged to Wisła. In the 17th minute, one of Odra’s defenders cleared the ball from in front of an open goal following a shot by Paweł Brożek. Two minutes later Junior Diaz hit the corner of the goal where the crossbar meets the goal post. Prior to this, however, Robert Kłos was carried off the pitch with a head injury after colliding with Piotr Brożek. An ambulance was called to the scene to evacuate the Odra defender.

In a subsequent play Diaz, who played on center defense, found himself in a one-on-one situation against Adam Stachowiak, but was unable to cleanly receive the ball, resulting in Odra’s goalkeeper beating the Costa Rican to the ball. In the 26th minute of the match Radosław Sobolewski played a perpendicular pass between Odra’s defenders to Rafał Boguski, who’s shot, however, was too weak to surprise Stachowiak.

The home team reasserted themselves towards the end of the first half. Firstly, Rygel received a long pass but failed to take advantage of a goal-scoring opportunity when his shot flew past the goal. A moment later, a corner kick converted into a header by Arkadiusz Aleksander landed straight into the hands of Mariusz Pawełek.

Wisła’s streak of bad luck continued into the second half of the match. Five minutes into the second half Paweł Brożek failed to send the ball into a completely open goal from a distance of just a few meters. Conversely, in the 52nd minute of the match Brożek’s shot did land inside Odra’s goal, but this time around Wisła’s striker was offside. In the 64th minute Brożek withdrew the ball from the end line back to Tomas Jirsak, who replaced Baszczyński after half time, but the Czech midfielder…likewise failed to score.

Odra played one man down from the 71st minute onwards after Arkadiusz Aleksander received a second yellow card. Despite this disadvantage, coach Wieczorek’s players could have caused an upset. In the 83rd minute Maciej Małkowski closed a play at the far goal post with a shot that just barely missed the goal.

The White Star kept on fighting for that winning goal and finally managed to score – in extra time! Paweł Brożek converted a pass from Marek Zieńczuk from the left side of the penalty area into a goal. Patryk Małecki, who took advantage of a one-on-one situation, set the final outcome of the match in the last second.
