The results of Friday’s matches of the 20th round of the Ekstraklasa made it possible for Wisła Kraków to tie Warsaw’s Legia in the league rankings. All the team had to do was to win in Bełchatów. The odds were in favor of the White Star, but this time around the Cracovians only tied GKS.

The fans gathered at GKS’ stadium failed to witness any goals during the first 45 minutes of the match, although the White Star should have led at least 2:0. The home team had their best, although not a 100% chance in the 2nd minute of the match. After a throw-in from the sidelines Janusz Dziedzic was close to reaching the ball, but was prevented from doing so by Arkadiusz Głowacki at the last moment. As time went by coach Maciej Skorża’s players created increasingly better goal-scoring opportunities. On three occasions the home team’s players cleared the ball on its way to the goal. First, Janusz Dziedzic cleared the ball in the 24th minute following a shot by Arkadiusz Głowacki. Edward Cecot rescued his team in the 36th minute, while in the 45th minute Janusz Gol once again took center stage by clearing the ball after Junior Diaz’s shot. Łukasz Sapela did a good job defending GKS’ goal by saving a shot by Radosław Sobolewski and deflected the ball onto the goalpost after Piotr Ćwielong’s shot. “Sobol” could also have added his name to the list of scorers in the 37th minute, but in attempting to lob the ball over Sapela the Wisła midfielder ended up sending it right into the keeper’s arms.

The White Star thus ended the first half of the match without scoring any goals, but this wasn’t the worst thing that happened. In extra time Łukasz Sapela ran into Paweł Brożek, who sustained a knee injury in the collision. The Wisła striker was carried off the field in a stretcher, and was replaced by Beto in the second half of the match.

The Bełchatów team began the second half with greater verve. Dawid Nowak, who was substituted in for Marcin Sobczak, did much to enliven the home team’s game. The match evened out, with both teams creating a number of good opportunities to take the lead. Beto had chances to score in the 66th and 67th minutes of the match; in the first instance Cecot cleared the ball out from under him at the last moment, while in the later case Sapela managed to catch the ball with the tips of his fingers after the Brazilian’s header. 20 minutes before the end of the match Ihor Mihalewskij, who had been substituted in for Janusz Dziedzic, could have taken the lead for his team, but his shot was barely off target. The home team redoubled their efforts in the last minutes in an attempt to score the winning goal, but ultimately failed to do so. The 23rd confrontation between GKS Bełchatów and Wisła Kraków thus ended in both teams taking home a point.
