Legia Wins the Polish Cup

Legia Warszawa emerged victorious in the Polish Cup. The league runner up won 4:3 following a penalty shootout.

A few minutes before the beginning of the match an unexpected change took place in Wisła’s lineup. Paweł Brożek stopped warming up, while Radosław Matusiak took his place. It later turned out that Paweł had bruised his ribs. Unfortunately, the absence of Brożek, who constitutes the team’s offensive force, was felt during the first half of the match.

Wisła took one menacing shot on their opponent’s goal, which was off target. In the 10th minute the home side carried out a nice play along the right flank. Rafał Boguski let the ball pass through to Mauro Cantoro, who dribbled the ball into the penalty area and took a powerful shot on goal, which ended up hitting the side net. Legia created more opportunities, as they could have taken the lead on at least two ocassions during the first half.

Following half time Matusiak was replaced by Jean Paulista. From the very beginning of the second half Wisła took the offensive, but then Legia quickly took the initiative, creating two excellent goal scoring opportunities in the course of a few minutes. First the ball passed along the entire length of Wisła’s penalty area following a cross made by Roger. The play was closed by Chinyama, who took a head shot on goal. The ball bounced off the cross bar to the other side of the goal, where it was kicked clear by Arkadiusz Głowacki, thereby preempting one of Legia’s players from taking a shot. A moment later Maciej Rybus took a shot from a few meters away that sailed above the cross bar.

The outcome of the match did not change until the end of regulation time and the match went into overtime. In the 6th minute of overtime Mariusz Pawełek once again had an opportunity to show off his excellent reflexes, saving a shot made by Roger from a few meters. In response, Jean Paulista failed to take advantage of Baszczyński’s cross, and took a head shot that sailed next to Mucha’s goal. The match ended in a goalless tie and had to be resolved by a penalty shootout.

Legia’s players turned out to be better in this department, winning 4:3. Jan Mucha saved two penalty shots executed by Paulista and Baszczyński. On Legia’s side, Vuković’s shot hit the crossbar. The following players succeeded in scoring: Głowacki, Zieńczuk, Cleber, while among Legia’s players: Szala, Roger, Smoliński and Wawrzyniak.
