Defeat in Jerusalem

Wisła Kraków lost 1:2 in the team's first-leg match against Beitar Jerusalem in the second round of Champions League qualifications. The White Star led 1:0, but allowed themselves to be caught off guard twice during the second half of the match.

Beitar began quite boldly by pushing up their offense, dominating the match during its initial stages.  Nonetheless, it was the White Star that took the lead.  Marek Zieńczuk sent the ball into the opponent’s penalty area from his own half of the pitch, and Paweł Brożek took advantage of a mistake made by Kale to send the ball into the net using his head.  The home side lost their footing for bit, but quickly recovered by showing that they would fight for victory till the very end.  Beitar managed to score a goal in the first half, but the referee was right not to recognize it, as Abreu was offside.

The second half of the match began with Beitar’s onslaught.  Wisła counted on carrying out counterattacks, and was able to do so in the 60th minute.  Paweł Brożek passed the ball to Sobolewski as he ran into the penalty area, and subsequently fell before being able to take a shot.  The referee didn’t call a penalty kick, and Beitar subsequently carried out a counterattack.  The ball wandered over to the right flank to Baruchyan, who ran in towards the center of the pitch and fired the ball just inside the goal post, leaving Pawełek with no chance of saving the shot.  Wisła threw themselves to the offensive and immediately began to create goal-scoring opportunities.  Boguski’s pass to Paweł Brożek, who was standing in front of an empty goal, was intercepted by one of Beitar’s defenders, while Zieńczuk’s shot was blocked.  The Wisła midfielder subsequently missed the target, with Paweł Brożek doing the same.  In the meantime, fate proved once again to be fickle, as it was the home side that scored.  Baruchyan had plenty of room to defeat Pawełek after exchanging a one-two pass with Abreu and breaking free of Cantoro’s coverage.

Towards the end of the match Wisła’s goalkeeper was amazingly able to defend two headshots, including one from his own teammate – Marcin Baszczyński.  Wisła had an opportunity to even the score in added time when Niedzielan found himself one-on-one with the goalie, but the Wisła forward ended up shooting the ball directly into Kale.

Wisła now find themselves further away from the third round of Champions League qualifications, with their task being all the more difficult as they shall have to manage without Marek Zieńczuk, who received a second yellow card, and consequently a red card, near the end of the match.
