An Unexpected Turn of Events

Wisła Kraków lost for the first time this season. The rushing locomotive from Poznań stood in Wisła's way, defeating the Kraków team as high as 4:1. Lech has not won at Reymonta Street for 15 years. On Sunday Coach Smuda's players broke this losing streak in Kraków.

No one expected such a beginning to the match, as after 7 minutes Lech already led 2:0!  Firstly, Rafał Murawski defeated Mariusz Pawełek in the 5th minute with a fantastic volley shot from the 16-meter mark.  A moment later, Semir Stilić scored a goal directly from a free kick.  Wisła’s goalie was additionally deceived as the ball ricocheted twice before falling into the net.

Despite having a two-goal advantage, Lech didn’t ease up on the pace and continued to strive to raise the score.  Fifteen minutes prior to the end of the first half Mariusz Pawełek defended a shot by Peszko, however, in the 40th minute Wisła’s goalie made a mistake that cost the team the loss of a third goal.  After Tomasz Bandrowski’s shot the ball passed along Pawełek’s hands and fell into the net.  The guests could have scored another goal in extra time, but were not able to take advantage of a mistake made by Wisła’s goalie.

In the second half of the match Coach Skorża substituted in Peter Singlar and Tomas Jirsak, the latter of whom presented himself especially well.  Wisła finally began to play the ball on the ground, and resigned from crossing the ball to Paweł Brożek, who was guarded by Lech’s tall defenders.  This change of strategy brought an effect in the 51st minute when, following a nice, collective team play, Rafał Boguski received the ball in Lech’s penalty area and packed the ball into the net in a one-on-one situation against Kotorowski.

Wisła went on the offensive, nonetheless, seven minutes after Boguski’s goal, Lech carried out a counterattack that gave them their fourth goal of the match.  Lewandowski received a perpendicular pass deep from the pitch and moved on the White Star’s goal.  The home side’s defenders stopped in their tracks to signal an off-side position, while the Railwaymen’s striker calmly ran forward and did not fail to take advantage of the situation.

Coach Skorża’s players attempted to equal their opponents’ tenacious play, but on this particular day Lech was well out of their reach.  This is Wisła’s first loss of the season.  The White Star is no longer the league leader, with the baton being passed to Polonia Warszawa.  A very important match against Tottenham London awaits Wisła in a few days.  They will have to do everything they can to erase from memory this painful loss against Lech Poznań and wage an even battle against the “Cockerels.”
