A Win At Last

In the last match of the 6th round of the Ekstraklasa, Wisła defeated Jagiellonia 2:0 in an away match. Goals by Mauro Cantoro and Rafał Boguski gave Wisła the victory.

Following Wisła’s defeat in the previous round, everyone began to wonder whether this had been merely a slip up on the job, or conversely, a real crisis.  After playing a good match in London it was time for a league test, which Maciej Skorża’s players passed.  On the other hand, the home team, which in the last five matches managed only to score 4 points, wanted to finally show that they were capable of winning.  They played an even game against the White Star during the first half of the match, with Darius Jarecki deserving mention as the player that stood out the most on his team.

Wisła attacked Piotr Lech’s goal from the very get go.  Following a mistake committed by one of Jagiellonia’s defenders, Paweł Brożek got hold of the ball, ran into the penalty area, and attempted to place the ball into the net.  However, Piotr Lech – who showed off a nice intervention – got the better of Brożek on this occasion.  The Polish champions tried to threaten their opponent’s goal a few more times.  These efforts brought an effect in the 25th minute of the match when Mauro Cantoro received a pass from Wojciech Łobodziński at the 16-meter mark and surprised Lech with a fantastic volley shot.

Ten minutes later one of “Jaga’s” strikers, Tomas Pesir, was penalized with a second yellow card and had to leave the pitch.  Nonetheless, in the last minutes of the first half it didn’t appear as though the hosts were playing one man down.  They continued to try and carry out plays that could end in on-target shots.

Wisła dominated during the second half of the match, but it wasn’t until the 83rd minute that the team confirmed their advantage, when Rafał Boguski added his name to the list of scorers after receiving a pass from Paweł Brożek.

Despite their advantage, the White Star committed mistakes that could have cost them the loss of a goal.  In the 68th minute of the match Głowacki beat Łukasz Tumicz to the ball at the very last moment, while in extra time Jarecki’s shot was blocked by Cleber.
