A Loss in the First Sparring Match

Published: 04-07-2008 14:30

Austria Vienna defeated Wisła 3:1 in the first sparring match the White Star played in Austria. Tomas Jirsak scored the only goal for the White Star.

It was easy to see that Austria Vienna’s team is only a week from the start of their season, while Wisła still has more than three weeks of preparations left. It was also apparent that this was the first time that the White Star played a match in such a defensive formation. Both Cleber and Łukasiewicz presented themselves well individually, however, on a few occasions they were unsuccessful in setting an offside trap.

The Austrians were able to take the lead following one of these plays. In the 14th minute Bazina found himself one-on-one in front of Cebanu, passed the goalkeeper, and even though he waited before kicking the ball into the empty goal, none of the White Star’s defenders were able to catch up to him.

Wisła responded in the 30th minute. Paweł Brożek received a nice pass, drew the goalie out from the goal, and passed the ball to Tomas Jirsak, who just had to direct the ball into the net. Wisła was able to hold on to the tie until the end of the first half.

Austria carried out the decisive play of the match shortly after the beginning of the second half. Głowacki pulled Okitie by the shirt in the penalty area and the referee unhesitatingly pointed towards the eleventh meter line. Acimović confidently converted the penalty kick into a goal. In the 56th minute Austria scored their 3rd goal, giving them a comfortable lead. The ball wandered over into the penalty area to Krammer, who shot the ball along the ground into the left corner of the goal, giving Pawełka no chance of saving the shot.

After gaining a comfortable lead Austria concentrated on counter attacking, while Wisła tried unsuccessfully to breach their opponents defense. Tomasz Dawidowski came closest to doing so in the 80th minute when he nicely trapped a long pass from Marek Zieńczuk in the penalty area and shot the ball just outside the goal post.
