A Five-Goal Show

Published: 07-08-2008 15:51

Following the match in Jerusalem, as well as the absence of both Arkadiusz Głowacki and Marek Zieńczuk, everyone was full of anxiety in the lead up to the second match against Beitar. As it turns out, unnecessarily so - Wisła put on a spectacular show of five goals, scored by: Mauro Cantoro, Cleber, Paweł Brożek, Junior Diaz, and Andrzej Niedzielan.

The White Star began the match fully concentrated.  The Kraków side practically attacked their opponents in their own penalty area, not allowing Beitar to even cross onto Wisła’s side of the pitch.  Things happened very quickly when it came to offense.  Already by the 9th minute Cantoro placed the ball on the 25-meter mark following a foul on Jirsak.  Although Mauro shot the ball into the corner of the goal, which Kale should have been guarding, his shot was both powerful enough and on target, leaving Kale with nothing to do but capitulate.  In this way Mauro was able to atone for the mistake he had made in Jerusalem.  Wisła, on the other hand, didn’t repeat the same mistake they made during the first match and went with the flow.  The scene in front of the guests’ penalty area surged time and gain, bringing an effect in the 25th minute of the match.  Following two goal-scoring opportunities, a third chance was to be had by Marcin Baszczyński, who ran onto the ball, but the referee judged him to have been fouled by Ziva, just as Baszczyński was about to take a shot on goal.  Cleber confidently converted the penalty kick into a goal.  This was not, however, the end of Wisła’s attacks in the first half.  Rafał Boguski sent a perpendicular pass to Paweł Brożek in the 36th minute of the match.  “Brozio” didn’t waste his opportunity and raised the score to 3:0.

At this point it became apparent that nothing would be able to threaten the White Star’s victory.  As if to confirm this fact, a few moments later Beitar failed to take advantage of their best opportunity during the entire match.  Abreu headed the ball following a cross from the left side, but Piotr Brożek cleared his shot.  Alas, the ball fell right onto Ytzhaki’s legs, who was standing at the 5 meter mark in front of an empty goal, with Pawełek having previously thrown himself into the goal’s corner in order to block Abreu’s shot.  Despite this fact, Ytzhaki kicked the ball over the crossbar…

5:0 – none of the fans sitting in the stands could have expected such an outcome.  Will Wisła be able to take on Barcelona, whom they face in the 3rd round of Champions League qualifications, if they continue to play so well?  We shall find out the first part of the answer to this question in a week’s time.
